Before the French intellectuals sought the comfort in their ivory towers, many men of letters were critics in such fields as music, art, architecture as well as writers, and some were even philosophers. The understanding of French literature is thus inseparable from the understanding of the overall currents of the arts, and we will systematically analyse French literary works and art works, from the Middle Ages to today, in a historical perspective of thought and reconstruct it from a contemporary view, to better understand the general currents of French literature and art.

How do you perceive 'difference'? This implies a philosophical questioning of identity and the Other, and it is an important question that arises when modern man tries to come to an understanding of his identity. We choose France as the 'Other' to look into, from a historical perspective, not only such fields as literature, music, art, architecture, but also its law, systems, the various ideologies the French have produced, to link it with the everyday life of the French, for a critical review.
