A summing-up of 16th and 17th century French literature. In the 16th century part we will study the nature of the Renaissance, through the poets of 'La Pl iade', and the influence of classic literature, through the works of writers such as Rabelais, Ronsard, and Montaigne. In the 17th century part we will look at the characteristics of Baroque literature in comparison with Classicism literature, the formation and outcomes of Classical dramaturgy and the dramatic unities, and also examine the thought of Descartes and Pascal and their place in history.

Following 'Introduction to French Literature 1', this course is a summing-up of the 18th century Enlightenment and 19th century Romanticism and Realism. First, we will look at the difference between 17th century and 18th century literary thought, try to grasp the Enlightenment philosophy through the works of Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau, and analyse the reception process of it in society and its influence on the next century. Then we will study the main currents of 19th century French literature through the Romanticists Chateaubriand, Balzac, Hugo, Stendhal and the Realist Flaubert.

This course aims at the understanding the various features of modern French literature, mainly through the diverse attempts in the novel genre from the eve of the first World War. We start with the works of Anatole France, Bourget, Barres, Romain Roland, Claudel, and proceed to the new novels of Proust and Gide, also the Literature of engagement of Malraux and Saint-Exupery, the Christian literature of Mauriac, Bernanos, Green, the Exstentialism novels of Camus and Sartre, and also the Nouveaux Romans.

For students who have already completed several major serv_01jects in the department of French studies, this course will practice French sentences in various actual settings, and also give the students an opportunity to train, not only the translation and understanding of sentences in a foreign language, but what is more, the ability to find Korean expressions that are most appropriate and closest to the meaning of the original expression, We will come to see, through examples of actual translations, that the difference between French expressions and their relevant Korean expressions comes not simply from the difference in language but from the difference in cultural backgrounds.

This course aims at the understanding of the two main currents of the 19th century French poetry, Romanticism and Symbolism. On the basis of the fundamental understanding acquired in 'Introduction to French Literature 1', we will do a specific study Romanticism through the works of Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo, and Musset. We will especially inquire into the significance of the Romanticism-Classicism debate to study their individual differences, and on the basis of the Symbolism worldview, we will analyse and study the poems of Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, and Mallarm .

This is an introductory course of the various theoretical methodology of traditional criticism and modern New Criticism. Passing by Taine and Bruntiere, we will look at the methodology of traditional criticism, perfected by Ranson, and also study the diverse currents of New Criticism, opposing the traditional methods, that is, the Structuralism of Barthes, Genette, Todorov, the Thematic Criticism of Poulet, Starobinski, Jean-Pierre Richard, the criticism of Blanchot, the imaginary studies of Bachelard, the socio-literary criticism of Goldmann, the literary criticism of Sartre etc.

In this course we will study Renaissance literature, the Baroque literature in the early 17th century, and the quintessence of Classicism literature, from Corneille to Racine and Molière. We will reach a deeper understanding of Classicism literature, that shows the most refined form of French literature, through regarding Classicism, not as an individual genre, separate from the past, but as a continuous movement leading down from the Renaissance and the Baroque of the early 16th and 17th centuries.
