We will study the various phonological
and phonetic changes in the course of the evolution
of the French language, from Latin to modern
French, and through our work we will hopefully
reach a deepened fundamental understanding of
the French language itself, together with laying
a foundation that accommodates the neighboring
languages in the same language family as French. |

If we take a literary work as the
representation of accumulation of the culture
of an epoch, it can be said that a comprehensive
understanding of the diverse and intricate culture
of today is a prerequisite for the understanding
of literary works. This course will, for the
actual study of literary works, look into the
relations between literature and various cultural
phenomena to search for a methodology that approaches
the comprehensive understanding of literature.

This course is complementary to 'Studies
in French Classicism'. If 'Studies in French Classicism'
studied 17th century literature from a Classicist
esthetical perspective, this course is generalizing
17th century literature by focusing on the main
authors of the century. We will look at the works
of Corneille and Racine, Moli re, and study the
different characteristics of these writers' work.

The 17th century in French literary
history is regarded as a period of the completion
of Classical esthetics. In Classical dramaturgy
the dramatic unities were established, and esthetics
based on the principles of harmony and order was
practiced. The later works of Corneille and the
works of Racine are studied, and a detailed study
of Classical esthetics as not only the main current
of the 17th century but as esthetics in general
French literature is conducted.

general 18th century literature focused on the

the masters of the 18th century, mainly Montesquieu,
Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau, and especially
see how they are loosely grouped together as Enlightenment
thinkers but at the same time how each show different

Surrealism is not merely a literary movement but
grew out to be a movement that influenced almost
all art genres of the early 20th century. This
course aims at understanding the essence of this
movement through the study of the thought and
works of some writers that played a leading role
in the movement. Beginning with Breton, we will
mainly study Tzara, Aragon, Soupault, and Eluard.

For a long time the study and research
on French linguistics and French literature was
concluded separately. However, linguistics and
literature have a close relationship and there
is ample room for linguistic methodology to be
applied to the study of literature. This course
will inquire into various examples where linguistic
research methods are applied to literary studies,
together with the problems such research brings.
We will mainly focus on stylistics, pragmatics,
and semiotics.
