We will study the thought and works of the masters of the 18th century, mainly Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau, and especially see how they are loosely grouped together as Enlightenment thinkers but at the same time how each show different literary characteristics.

This course will inquire into various examples where linguistic research methods are applied to literary studies, together with the problems such research brings. We will mainly focus on stylistics, pragmatics, and semiotics.
